Our Journey to Freedom

Discover the story behind Covert Free, our unique approach to healing, and the lasting impact we strive to make in the lives of survivors of psychological abuse. We're here to empower you.

Our unique approach: Lived experience meets expertise

We Built What We Wish Had Existed

Most abuse resources are built around the kind of abuse everyone already recognizes.

Covert Free was built for the kind people struggle to name.

We did not learn this from a textbook. We lived it. Then we went and got the knowledge, training, and credentials to back up what we experienced.

That lived experience shapes everything we build.

Every resource, assessment, training, and tool starts with one question:

Does this actually match what it feels like?

Not just what a diagnostic manual says. Not just what a textbook describes. Not what abuse is supposed to look like from the outside.

What does it actually feel like from the inside, while it is happening to you?

That distinction matters.

We Build for Both Sides of the Problem

Most programs treat survivors and professionals as two separate audiences.

We do not.

Professionals can have extensive training and still encounter a blind spot when they have never been taught how covert psychological abuse and coercive control can present in real life.

Survivors can know something is wrong and still lack the language, framework, or validation to explain what they are experiencing.

So we build for both.

Our professional tools are designed to support real-world assessment, education, documentation, and informed practice.

Our survivor resources are designed for the moments when you are alone, overwhelmed, questioning your own reality, and trying to make sense of what happened.

Because the gap between “something is wrong” and “I understand what is happening” can change everything.

Lived Experience. Professional Knowledge. Real-World Tools.

Covert Free exists to close that gap.

We bring survivor experience and professional education together to make psychological abuse easier to recognize, understand, document, and address.

We are not just talking about the problem. We are building the tools to help change how it is understood.

Envisioning a future of self-trust

We want people to stop doubting themselves. That is the whole vision.

Someone finds Covert Free confused, exhausted, and wondering if they are the problem. We want them to leave with clarity. Knowing what happened. Understanding the patterns. And knowing it was never their fault.

But clarity is only the beginning.

We want survivors rebuilding from there.

Setting boundaries without guilt. Trusting their own judgment again. Recognizing the patterns earlier when they appear in a relationship, a workplace, or a friendship, so they do not lose years of their lives to something they could not yet name.

Because we know what it costs when you do not have the language to recognize what is happening.

Changing the Systems That Miss It

Long term, we want Covert Free woven into the systems that are supposed to recognize and respond to psychological abuse.

Therapists trained to recognize the patterns.
DV organizations equipped to name what survivors are experiencing.
Professionals who know what to look for before another survivor has to explain it from scratch.

And survivors who do not have to stumble onto the right words by accident.

The lasting impact is not one moment of finally feeling understood.

It is rebuilding a life where you trust yourself again, recognize what threatens that trust, and know how to protect it.

That is the future we are building at Covert Free.
